Welcome back to another edition of The Scouting Notebook.
The Scouting Notebook will feature prospects to watch during the college football slate. While some may think it’s too early to start talking about the 2026 NFL draft, there’s never a bad time to discuss the future of the Chargers.
That said, here are the players to watch for in Week 4.
C Connor Lew, Auburn
Lew has looked like the clear-cut best center in the draft to open the college football season and could soon push his way into the mainstream first-round conversation despite the limited positional value of pure centers in the draft. That same limiting factor for Lew could prove to be a boon for the Chargers, who look like they will be picking relatively late in the round and still have a glaring need at center even with the offensive line performing well through two weeks.
EDGE Romello Height, Texas Tech
We highlighted Height’s teammate, David Bailey, last week, but scouts are coming away from the Red Raiders‘ tape just as interested in the Georgia Tech transfer. Height and Bailey have a marquee matchup coming up on Saturday with Utah tackles Caleb Lomu and Spencer Fano, who are currently the favorites to finish as OT1 and OT2 in this draft class. All the attention will be on Bailey as the more high-profile prospect, but Height could begin to turn some national heads with a splash performance.
CB Xavier Scott, Illinois
The CB1 race is wide open this season, following a few disappointing starts and Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy’s continued unavailability as he recovers from a knee injury. LSU’s Mansoor Delane has made a strong claim on that spot, but the Tigers play Southeastern Louisiana this week, so we’ll save him for a future installment. Scott is in that next tier after starting the season strong on a good Illinois team and has a big-time showdown with QB1 hopeful Fernando Mendoza and Indiana on the other side this Saturday.
EDGE Gabe Jacas, Illinois
Another member of the Fighting Illini that the Chargers could have their eyes on is Jacas, the athletic edge rusher. Jacas is a high-energy player with club-like hands who converts speed to power like no other. After finishing last year with eight sacks and three forced fumbles, he is trending towards topping those numbers, currently with 3.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles.
OL Brock Dieu, Washington State
The Chargers will be in the market to solidify the left guard and center spots this next offseason, so Dieu should be an appealing target to them. A former wrestler and track athlete, Dieu gave up zero sacks and six pressures a season ago. He hasn’t allowed a single pressure or sack up to this point in the season. But in addition to being a wall in pass protection, Dieu is strongest in the run-blocking department.
