Eagles-Rams updates: Birds losing at halftime as offense sputters

PHILADELPHIA — Greetings from the Lincoln Financial Field press box. We’ve got a good one today as the Philadelphia Eagles square off with the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3.

This is a playoff rematch for the Eagles and Rams. Saquon Barkley powered Philly to an NFC divisional round win in January, rushing for 205 yards and two long touchdowns. But Matthew Stafford and the Rams’ offense gave the Eagles their toughest postseason test en route to Super Bowl LIX.

Stafford, Puka Nakua and Davante Adams will challenge the Eagles’ secondary. On the other side, Eagles star A.J. Brown could have a bounce-back performance after two frustrating games against the Cowboys and Chiefs.

Stay tuned here throughout the afternoon for updates.

SECOND QUARTER

0:10 — Rams 19, Eagles 7

The Eagles are lucky to only be down 12 going into halftime. Vic Fangio’s defense is stepping up and holding the Rams to field goals. But Kevin Patullo’s offense has to wake up and do something. The boo birds were out after another three-and-out, finishing off the fourth straight drive with a punt.

3:43 — Rams 16, Eagles 7

Another three-and-out for the Eagles, and another field goal for the Rams. The Eagles have netted negative-10 yards on the last three series. Missing star offensive tackle Lane Johnson hurts. But that has to change.

9:15 — Rams 13, Eagles 7

The Eagles’ red-zone defense comes up big and holds the Rams to a 28-yard field goal. Kyren Williams looked like he scored from a couple yards out but a blatant holding penalty pushed the Rams back. Philly’s offense has gone three-and-out the last two series. Gotta string together a drive here.

FIRST QUARTER

1:20 — Rams 10, Eagles 7

Touchdown, Rams. Matthew Stafford to Davante Adams for 44 yards. The Eagles were seemingly in zone defense, Adams got behind the second level and caught a one-on-one ball over safety Reed Blankenship for the score.

4:00 — Eagles 7, Rams 3

Los Angeles responds with a 51-yard field goal by Joshua Karty. Kyren Williams got things going a bit on the ground before the Rams stalled out thanks to pressure on Matthew Stafford and strong tackling in the open field.

8:07 — Eagles 7, Rams 0

The tush push isn’t going anywhere … at least not for now. A tush push score by Jalen Hurts finishes off a short-field drive after Zack Baun’s interception in Rams territory.

Hurts handed the ball in the end zone to Jordan Mailata for the offensive tackle to spike it. Fitting, considering Mailata’s passionate defense of the tush push this week.

Also of note: on first-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Hurts targeted A.J. Brown on a play-action pass. Brown nearly hauled in a one-handed catch but drew a pass interference. The Eagles need to continue to target the All-Pro.
