The Boston Celtics have long been a team with one of the best defenses in the NBA, and have been an innovating ball club over that stretch with the creativity they have used to create such a powerful defense out of non-traditional coverages and player usage.
But after letting players like Al Horford, Luke Kornet, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis find their way to a new team, the Celtics’ defensive strategies are going to change — and in some areas in ways that will have it looking like an entirely different sort of defense. That does not mean that Boston will not have a good defense, but in a campaign where much of the focus will be on developing younger players, that also means that growing pains on that end of the court are all but guaranteed.
