TICONDEROGA — Beekmantown prides itself in ball control and Ticonderoga gave them a taste of its own medicine.
It lasted only one drive, as the Eagles took control and would score on six consecutive drives to defeat the Sentinels, 51-20
Beekmantown (3-0, 2-0 CVAC) stayed true to itself with 346 yards on 28 carries split between the tandem of quarterback Hunter Porter and running backs Shamus Bibeau and Carter LaPier.
“It’s whoever’s feeling it that night, you know, whoever’s hot, whoever wants it,” LaPier said. “We come out every week, and we just all rotate, and we all do a great job.
“I think we’re a three way threat, and we come out and we execute.”
Bibeau led the tandem with 121 yards on the ground. LaPier added 101 and Porter had 71.
“We take pride and run the football,” Beekmantown head coach Joe Fish said. “We did a good job of that tonight. The boys knew we needed a good start and we needed to play a full four quarters, which I feel like we did.
“We shot ourselves in the foot a few times with some penalties. We got that up, you know, for next weekend.”
One penalty that happened early in the game was running into the kicker on fourth down. When the Eagles recovered the ball, one could hear Garrett Pelkey screaming at his team to wake up and play to their level.
“All week, you know, all week, our coach was saying we can’t play down to their level,” Porter said. “We know how good of a team we are, and we know the standard of Eagle football.
“Ticonderoga is a good football team. We just wanted to play to our level and be proud of how we played.”
Beekmantown built a 14-0 lead on touchdowns of two and nine yards by Porter and Bibeau, respectively.
Ticonderoga (0-3, 0-2 CVAC) cut into the lead when Trevor Blanchard returned his second kickoff for a touchdown in two weeks, with an 89-yard return.
Pelkey would answer with a long kickoff return of his own, capped by Porter’s second touchdown of the night.
“We lit a little fire under ourselves,” Porter said. You know, coming out here, I’m only putting six up in the first, we know, we can do better than that. And we really showed it in the second quarter.”
LaPier added a 20 yard scamper to push the lead to 23 before halftime.
After the break, Porter went through the air and connected with Pelkey for a 12 yard touchdown.
Ti and Beekmantown would then proceed to trade touchdowns as Blanchard scored his second of the night and Jackson Dorsett found Rowen Bechtold for a 13 yard touchdown in the fourth.
The Eagles Cole Brodi scored from nine yards out between the Sentinel scores in the third and Carson Ladue scored from seven yards out with a minute remaining in the game.
But, it wasn’t all smooth for Beekmantown. A few drives were halted by penalties and miscues happened early.
“I mean, we take pride in obviously playing disciplined football, and tonight wasn’t our best night when it comes to that,” Fish said. “So we definitely need to clean that up, because a team like Peru will take advantage of those opportunities. So I definitely want to clean that up for next week.”
Not only will it be a battle between two undefeated teams, but it will be the home opener for Beekmantown as they welcome their rivals, Saturday. LaPier and Porter agreed practice will be a bit harder this week as they prepare for a big game.
Porter added it really comes to fine tuning the little things.
“It’s definitely some mental mistakes,” he said. “Keeping our mouths shut, you know, we got to keep our heads on straight. We’re definitely working on the little things.
“Practice is going to be a little tougher now, since, you know, it’s a big game Saturday. But, yeah we just have to keep our heads on, fix the little things.”
