Eagles' statistical data prove Quinyon Mitchell's brilliance

More important matters are at hand, but now that we have finally come down off the adrenaline rush stemming from a torrid Philadelphia Eagles rally, the mind wanders. The day after their wild come-from-behind victory doubles as the players’ day off. One of those players is someone we’ve grown to expect excellence from, second-year cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.

It’s hard to ask for much more than he gave his teammates during his rookie season. He and Cooper DeJean were both named as Defensive Rookie of the Year finalists. Fast forward to the present, and three games into the Eagles‘ regular season, both are off to another hot start.

Mitchell enjoyed a great day vs. Davante Adams. He was impressive based on the eyeball test alone, but that doesn’t sufficiently detail how good he has been.

Next Gen Stats provides great detail in describing another solid Quinyon Mitchell afternoon.

As the Eagles said goodbye to some familiar faces this past offseason, four members of their secondary left town for other opportunities. Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, and Isaiah Rodgers found new homes via free agency. C.J. Gardner-Johnson was traded.

Losing those four, among others, Josh Sweat and Milton Williams, for instance, led to lengthy discussions about whether Vic Fangio’s unit would decline. So far, they haven’t. Coach Fangio, though he says he isn’t, has proven to be a master of second-half adjustments.

He also knew he had some young cornerstones to build on, like Mitchell. How about his day vs. Los Angeles Rams star Davante Adams? Next Gen Stats offered a full breakdown of their one-on-one matchups.

We questioned Philadelphia’s pass rush all spring and summer. So far, we haven’t seen the pop we had hoped for. There are still questions about an apparent weakness in the defensive unit at the cornerback position.

No one has had to question Quinyon Mitchell, though. He was someone we knew the Eagles could hang their hats on. They have done so to their benefit, to the tune of some outstanding secondary play by the second-year star.

Pro Football Focus gives him an overall grade of 65.9 after three games and grades of 73.4 and 63.7 vs. the run and pass, respectively. He has played 121 total snaps, 81 in coverage, and has allowed a 71.9 passer rating when targeted. Barring something unseen, he will be phenomenal for many years to come. He’s been scary good vs. some of the best wide receivers the game has to offer.
