Fans turn on New York Giants as offense goes stagnant in 22-9 loss to Chiefs

The New York Giants (0-3) saw a complete reversal of fortunes on Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs (1-2), with their offense going cold and their defense stepping up with a solid performance until late.

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson completed 18 of his 32 pass attempts for 160 yards and two costly interceptions. As frustrations mounted, which included the elimination of wide receiver Malik Nabers from the game (credit Steve Spagnuolo), fans began to chant “We want Jaxson Dart” so loud it could be heard through the NBC broadcast.

The Giants also suffered early in the game due to missing a kicker. Graham Gano endured an injury pre-game and wasn’t able to take the field until the fourth quarter, leading the Giants to attempt multiple four downs while also having a point after attempt (PAT) blocked.

With the loss, the Giants remain in the basement of the NFC East and face another tough challenge in Week 4 when they host the Los Angeles Chargers (3-0).

Final score: Chiefs 22, Giants 6

Chiefs 3 6 7 6 22

Keys to the Game

  • The Giants converted just one of their 10 third-down opportunities (and 1-2 on fourth down). Without a kicker for three-plus quarters, that was unsustainable.
  • With two interceptions, New York lost the turnover battle, 0-2.
  • The Giants threw for just 151 yards, averaging only 4.4 yards per pass.

It was over when…

… Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes hit wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who hauled in the reception around the body of cornerback Dru Phillips, for 33 yards midway through the fourth quarter. It set Kansas City up with a first-and-goal, which was quickly converted on a one-yard touchdown run by Kareem Hunt.

The play broke the Giants’ back and effectively eliminated any chance of a comeback based on a likely field goal alone. The touchdown just put the nail in the coffin, giving the Chiefs a 22-9 lead with 6:03 remaining.

Players of the Game

  • RB Cam Skattebo: The rookie running back out-produced the entire offense with 121 total yards and one touchdown on just 16 touches.
  • LB Brian Burns: Despite injuring his knee, Burns racked up six tackles (five solo, one for a loss), two passes defensed, two QB hits, and 1.0 sack.
  • LB Abdul Carter: Although he didn’t blow up the box score, the rookie edge rusher played well in multiple roles, recording four tackles (three solo, one for a loss), and one QB hit.

Injuries

Kicker Graham Gano suffered a groin injury during pregame warmups and was listed as questionable to return. He sat out for three-plus quarters before coming in to hit a chip-shot field goal before doubling over in obvious pain.

Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. left the game after a big collision on the Chiefs’ sideline. He was originally listed as questionable to return, but was later downgraded to out with a shoulder injury.

Linebacker Brian Burns appeared to hyperextend his knee while batting down a pass and briefly came out of the game before returning. He did not receive a designation.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers was injured while attempting to battle for a ball in the end zone. Replay showed he was hit in the helmet and may have also dinged up his shoulder. He was tended to by trainers, briefly exited the game and later returned.

Midway through the corner, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence apparently suffered an elbow injury, as reported by the NBC broadcast. He missed a few plays but ultimately stayed in.

What’s next?

Giants head coach Brian Daboll will hold a Zoom call with the team’s beat writers on Monday afternoon, before a few players are also made available.

The Giants will return to practice on Wednesday ahead of a Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, September 28, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. EDT.
