Colts reportedly worked out multiple running backs after Week 3 win

Following the Indianapolis Colts’ Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans, the team reportedly worked out a few running backs on Monday.

According to Jake Arthur of the Roundtable Network, the Colts worked out Israel Abanikanda, Raheem Blackshear, and Damien Martinez.

Abanikanda was a fifth-round pick out of Pittsburgh in 2023 by the New York Jets. He spent two seasons with New York, carrying the ball 22 times as a rookie at 3.2 yards per attempt. He also has some return experience.

This year, Abanikanda spent time with San Francisco and most of training camp with Green Bay.

Blackshear went undrafted in 2022 and spent his first three NFL seasons with Carolina. This included carrying the ball 52 times at 3.9 yards per rush with three scores.

He has some passing game experience and ample attempts in the return game.

Lastly, Martinez was a seventh-round pick this past April out of Miami by Seattle. In the preseason, he totaled 84 rushing yards on 24 carries, per PFF.

We’ve already seen the Colts make tweaks at the running back position on the practice squad this season, releasing Khalil Herbert after Week 1 to sign Ameer Abdullah.

Based on the previous experience of the three backs brought in for workouts, depth at the return man position could be on GM Chris Ballard’s radar.

A signing may or may not be imminent. As Ballard said before the season, over the first month, the Colts would have a number of players in for workouts to build out a list of potential players to call upon this year if needed.
