Former Nets coach Steve Nash to be senior advisor to Suns, Mat Ishbia

The Brooklyn Nets are one day away from training camp for the 2025-26 NBA season beginning as the team prepares for what could be another tough season to watch. Brooklyn made some significant changes to the roster over the course of the summer, but at the same time, one of the franchise’s former members is still looking for opportunities to be involved in the NBA.

According to Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia on Monday, former Nets head coach Steve Nash will be joining the Suns as a senior advisor with the 2025-26 season about one month from beginning. Nash, who hasn’t been part of the Suns organization since his days as a player, isn’t new to consulting as he once was an advisor for the Golden State Warriors during its rise into prominence.

“Steve Nash was an amazing player and exactly what the Phoenix Suns are all about,” Ishbia wrote in his post on X. “His grit, toughness, and winning mentality have defined our organization in the past, and I’m so excited to share that Steve is formally joining the Suns as a senior advisor and will help us define our future for years to come!”

Nash, 51, spent most of his NBA career playing for the Suns as he spent 10 of his 18 years with the organization spread across two different stints. Nash initially came to Phoenix as the 15th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft out of Santa Clara where he spent his first two seasons before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks where he spent the following six seasons.

Nash made it back to the Suns as a free-agent ahead of the 2004-05 campaign where he ushered in a new era for the Suns under head coach Mike D’Antoni, resulting in Nash winning his first of two Most Valuable Player awards. Since retiring following the conclusion of the 2014-15 season, Nash has been operating in various roles, including being the head coach of the Nets from 2020 until October of the 2022-23 season.
