LSU football isn’t making a change at the right tackle position. Despite some inconsistent play from Weston Davis, LSU head coach Brian Kelly said the position is not up for grabs.
In LSU’s win vs. SE Louisiana in Week 4, Chester replaced Davis at RT to start the second half. The game was already decided at that point.
Kelly said the decision was just about getting Chester work and giving Davis a break.
“Weston Davis has done a really good job. He needed a break. We needed to get him, you know, back to where he needs to be as one of the five guys working together, so it was a good learning experience for him, but more importantly, we wanted to get DJ some more tackle reps. As you know, he’s gotten plenty of center reps. He started 13 games for us last year, so this was more of an opportunity to get him in the game and get some more tackle reps, because as referenced earlier, he’s our first guy in at any one of those five positions,” Kelly said.
Davis, a redshirt freshman, is in year one as a starter. Davis was a blue-chip recruit in the class of 2024 and won the right tackle job in the spring. Early in 2024, we’ve seen some growing pains. Davis struggled to run block vs. Louisiana Tech, was bad vs. Florida, and allowed a sack vs. SE Louisiana.
Still, Kelly and LSU are trusting in the talented youngster.
