Oklahoma Sooners climb in USA TODAY Sports latest College Football Playoff projections

The Oklahoma Sooners may not be playing great football right now, but they’re winning games and that’s all that matters. Their 24-17 win over the Auburn Tigers was a strong reminder that winning ugly is way better than losing pretty and that sometimes, you need to catch a few breaks.

Oklahoma did both things on Saturday to move to 4-0. After this past weekend’s action, the Sooners moved up to No. 10 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll. They’re also No. 7 in the AP Top 25, the first time they’ve been ranked in the top 10 since the 2023 season.

After their win over Auburn, Oklahoma moved up to No. 2 in USA TODAY Sports’ latest College Football Playoff projections from Matt Hayes.

Hayes is strictly relying on each team’s performance on the field and not preseason rankings or even the current polls to guide his playoff projections.

The Oklahoma Sooners have a pair of top 25 wins through their first four games and won their other two in blowout fashion. They have about as good as a resume as you’ll find out their for inclusion in the College Football Playoff field at this point.

They’ll have to continue proving their worth along the way. Matchups with Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, and LSU still await. Getting through that stretch with two losses or fewer will be tough. But if the Sooners can find a running game and continue to keep John Mateer comfortable in the passing attack, the Sooners will have a chance to win every single game on their schedule with the way their defense has been playing.
