Aston Villa are aiming to work swiftly after the decision to move Monchi on from President of Football Operations by hiring Roberto Olabe.
A former Real Sociedad goalkeeper, Olabe went to coach after his retirement before becoming a Director of Football.
After spending time at Real Valladolid and Almería, Olabe made his name in the role on his return to La Real, a time in which the club won the Copa del Rey in 2019/20 and a fourth-placed La Liga position in 2022/23.
His work with the Basque side saw him awarded a Gold and Diamond Badge – the club’s highest honour – as he exited the club.
Should the deal be finalised as expected according to The Athletic, Olabe will be expected to help revive Aston Villa’s fortunes alongside manager Unai Emery after a winless start to the 2025/26.
