Texas A&M OC listed as an early candidate for Oklahoma State HC opening

Texas A&M’s hot offensive start to the 2025 season under second-year OC Collin Klein would likely result in the former Kansas State quarterback, who was one of three Heisman finalists, along with former Texas A&M QB and eventual Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, receiving outside attention for future head coach openings, which transpired on Tuesday afternoon.

After 20 seasons as Oklahoma State’s eccentric but well-respected head football coach, Mike Gundy was dismissed due to the Cowboys’ dismal 1-2 start, including last week’s home loss to Tulsa. Not being able to recruit and utilize the transfer portal at a high level, Gundy, like longtime Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, is living in a different age.

Oklahoma State is now likely looking at a younger name with promise, and according to On3 college football analyst Pete Nakos, Collin Klein is one of eleven names Oklahoma State’s Board of Directors will consider, especially after his incredible play-calling performance during A&M’s Week 3 road victory over Notre Dame.

“The former Kansas State quarterback has quickly turned the Aggies into an explosive offense in the SEC. He’s played a key role in the development of quarterback Marcel Reed, who led Texas A&M to a road win at Notre Dame earlier this season. Texas A&M’s offense currently averages 480.3 yards per game. Klein was at K-State for seven years as an assistant before making the jump to College Station. Is it time he gets a hard look as a head coach?”

Before taking over the play-calling duties in College Station, Klein served as Kansas State’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from 2017 to 2023, and has been one of the rising stars in the coaching ranks ever since.

As Nakos correctly points out, Klein’s relationship with starting quarterback Marcel Reed has helped the redshirt sophomore make significant strides as a pocket passer this season, which will serve him well in any potential interview process, whether near or distant.

Texas A&M’s offense (20th) and passing offense (16th) will continue to garner more attention for Klein if this success continues into SEC play.
