Top 5 waiver claims to make in fantasy football heading into week 4

Another week of football in the books means another week of waiver wire decision. My overarching advice this week is to avoid using your waiver priority or FAAB this week. If your league uses priority, you should avoid using it at all and check if these players are still around as free agents. If you use FAAB, it’s worth putting in a $0 or $1 bid if you have expendable roster spots. Here are my top five targets this week:

Raiders WR Tre Tucker – 2.2% rostered

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s unlikely that Tre Tucker’s monster week three performance is the jumping off point to becoming the league’s next star receiver. However, some of Tucker’s underlying metrics are encouraging. In particular, Tucker’s 19.4% target share is a really solid mark, especially for a player who does most of his work deep downfield. He’s been getting open on vertical routes all year, but with shoddy play upfront, the opportunities to hit them have been difficult to come by. He could be an interesting boom-bust flex option if you’re in a pinch.

Dolphins RB Ollie Gordon – 23.2% rostered

After just three rushing attempts in the first two games of his career, Gordon handled it eight times in a competitive game against the Bills. He has some level of weekly upside as the team’s primary short yardage back, but this is more about what happens if Devon Achane gets hurt, as he’s done a number of times throughout his career. The coaching staff clearly trusts Gordon, and he could be in for big volume on the ground if thrust into a starting role. It’s worth noting that Jaylen Wright is returning from an injury sustained in the preseason, and would likely have a pass catching role if Achane went down.

Texans WR Christian Kirk – 21.8% rostered

Kirk had a very inefficient debut with the Texans, catching just three of his eight targets for 25 yards. However, getting eight targets on 33 routes is a good sign on its own. The Texans offense continues to be a mess overall, but Kirk could rack up easy catches as CJ Stroud attempts to survive behind a very poor line. Again, I wouldn’t make adding Kirk a priority, but he’s at least worth monitoring

Chargers DST – 12.5% rostered

For those of you streaming defenses on a week to week basis (which should be most of you), look no further than the NFL’s number four scoring defense in the NFL. They haven’t been the most prolific fantasy defense, averaging a modest 6.7 points per game, but what better way to turn that around than facing a rookie quarterback in his first career start. The Chargers face the Giants on Sunday, where Jaxson Dart will make his NFL debut, where turnovers should be easier to come by.

Bonus: Chargers TE Oronde Gadsden – 0.1% rostered

This one is for the dynasty sickos out there. For anyone unfamiliar, Gadsden played wide receiver for his first two years at Syracuse before converting to tight end. He had a season over 900 yards at each position, and has legit receiving chops. The Chargers took him in the fifth round, and in his NFL debut, he recorded five catches for 46 yards while running just 15 routes. He was a healthy scratch for the first two games, but was made active last week due to an injury. He could very well return to the inactive list, but he’s absolutely worth a stash in dynasty leagues, especially tight end premium leagues
