Jeff Saturday takes issue with Drew Brees' criticism of the Eagles offense

As this story is being written, it is only Wednesday. There have been plenty of stories to keep us engaged during another workweek for the Philadelphia Eagles. While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may not be considered a true rival, you’ll easily find plenty of Eagles fans who can’t stand the sight of them.

Recently, they’ve become a nuisance again. They’ve been Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni’s kryptonite more often than not. One can add to the game’s intrigue by noting that Philadelphia announced nine roster moves on Wednesday, including the addition of Nolan Smith to the injured reserve.

Oh, and by the way, Jihaad Campbell and Zack Baun watched Wednesday’s practice without participating. Campbell didn’t have his helmet and wore a sleeve on his right leg. Baun had his helmet and a brace on his left leg.

Paying attention to all of that might make it easy to miss anything else that has occurred, but if you could stomach a couple of the daily early-morning shouting matches on ESPN, you may have caught something these past two days. Drew Brees, while guesting on First Take, stated that he respected Philadelphia, but the Eagles’ offense was “boring.” One day later, a response came from another of the NFL’s recent legends.

Okay, so who’s surprised here? As Jeff Saturday mentioned, no one should be shocked by a future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback saying he is bored by a run-heavy offense.

In the same vein, there’s another side to the same coin. No one should be shocked by a center worthy of HOF consideration taking issue with that, nor should they be surprised when that former NFL center describes a run-first team as if it’s the most beautiful thing that he has ever seen.

Truthfully, both Saturday and Brees are right. Seeing Saquon eclipse 2,000 yards rushing last season was a joy to watch. It doesn’t get more beautiful than his first TD run on the Eagles’ first offensive play of last January’s NFC Championship Game.

It’s also fair to state that Philadelphia’s offense almost put us all to sleep during the first eight quarters of the 2025-26 regular season. The Birds were boring to watch. Then, the passing attack caught fire in the second half of Week 3 as they rallied to beat the Los Angeles Rams.

Balance is needed, but Barkley is struggling. The solution? The Eagles should air it out and get A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith more involved. That will open running lanes and improve Barkley’s production as a byproduct.

Did we really just say Philadelphia should use the pass to set up the run? This isn’t your father’s NFL anymore. The theory makes sense, though. Barkley hasn’t gotten off to a Barkley-esque start, but there are too many weapons on this Eagles offense for it to sputter. They need to win differently. For now, they may have to win the Drew Brees way.
