In this continued series, Sixers Wire looks at the 16 players, per Sportrac, that comprise the Philadelphia 76ers roster — 13 under standard contracts and the three players on two-way deals — and gives each three goals for the 2025-26 season.
The new season begins on Oct. 22, and training camp is right around the corner. Now is the time to begin previewing the new season of adventure that is Sixers basketball.
Up next in this series is star guard Tyrese Maxey. He was unable to make his second-straight All-Star appearance in 2025, but he was able to average a career-high 26.3 points. The issue was that his efficiency was down to 43.7% shooting overall and 33.7% shooting from deep which is just not Maxey-like.
For the dynamic guard entering his sixth season, his three goals are as follows:
Continue being a leader
Maxey has taken big steps forward in this department. While Philadelphia’s best players remain Joel Embiid and Paul George, the Sixers have turned to Maxey to be the vocal leader for this group and get everybody together for them to move forward. He has done a great job of doing so in the summer to make sure everybody is working out together and building chemistry, and he also deserves credit for doing so in the 2024-25 season when everything was crashing down around him. The Sixers will continue leaning on him to be that leader when they need it.
Get back to his efficient shooting levels
Maxey’s shooting took a big dip in 2024-25 as he was the focus of game plans night in and night out. With the return of Embiid and George from their injuries, that should take focus off of Maxey and allow him to get back to his career norms of 46.1% shooting overall and 38.1% from deep. He is a player who was the model of efficiency before this previous season. He should be in a much better position to lead this group once Embiid and George return. The Sixers will continue looking his way to be the one to carry this offense from the perimeter.
Push the break
The Sixers have to play faster in the upcoming season. The front office knows it, too. They went out and brought in younger, faster, and more versatile pieces in order to push the break and take advantage of the athletes on the roster. Maxey has to be the one to lead the way in that department as he will look to get Philadelphia moving in the right direction in terms of that faster paced offense. The horses are there around him, but it will be up to Maxey to get out and push things forward in order to get the Sixers moving on the break.
