We’ve got a couple of roster moves to recap after Wednesday’s New Orleans Saints practice session. And the biggest point to consider is an injury to one of the team’s backup quarterbacks. Rookie lefty Hunter Dekkers suffered a shoulder injury that is putting him on the seldom-used practice squad injured reserve, which works the same way as the regular injured reserve for players on the 53-man roster. Dekkers can be activated once healthy and return to the practice squad, but for now, he’s on the mend.
Additionally, the Saints brought back wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. to take his place on the practice squad. Austin was signed to the 53-man roster ahead of last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks, and he could get promoted again for this Sunday’s matchup with the Buffalo Bills. Alternatively, the Saints could use one of their two weekly elevations to bring him if they choose to play him again.
One more thing — rookie tight end Moliki Matavao is back on the 53-man roster after being waived before the Seahawks game. He was picked in the seventh round of this year’s draft and will continue to get time to develop. He’s got good size for the position and made some plays over the summer at training camp and in the preseason games, but that hasn’t transitioned to the regular season just yet. The clock is ticking with Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau working their way back from knee injuries, which will crowd the tight ends room.
