UAB's Sirad Bryant suspended for stomping on the foot of Tennessee kicker Max Gilbert

UAB safety Sirad Bryant received a one-game suspension for stomping on the foot of Tennessee football kicker Max Gilbert, Blazers coach Trent Dilfer said on Sept. 22 on Blazer Sportsline.

“He won’t play in the next game,” Dilfer said. “He’ll still be a full member of our team. We love Sirad. Sirad is a great kid, a very big part of our team. He’ll still help us try to go win against Army, he just won’t be on the field.”

UAB (2-2) hosts Army (1-2) on Oct. 4 in its first game since the No. 15 Vols (2-2) pounded the Blazers 56-24 at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 20.

Bryant smashed his foot down onto Gilbert’s following a first-quarter extra point in that game.

He initially bumped into Vols holder Jackson Ross, who reacted to Bryant quickly. Bryant then moved toward Gilbert, who was standing in place after the extra-point attempt that put the Vols ahead 21-0 with 4:01 left to play in the first quarter. He stomped on Gilbert’s foot, which prompted a bigger reaction from Ross.

Bryant received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for his action as at least three officials threw a penalty flag.

“He is brokenhearted,” Dilfer said. “He knows he made a mistake. He is willing to take the consequences of his poor decision-making. As he said to me, he allowed his outside circumstances to affect his choice. He knows he is wrong for that and he knows there’ll be consequences to that.”

Dilfer vowed following Tennessee’s win that Bryant would face discipline for his actions. Bryant posted an apology on his Instagram account on Sept. 20, calling the act “inexcusable” and apologizing specifically to Gilbert. The Cordele, Georgia, native went on to apologize to a range of people affiliated with the UAB program in the Instagram post on Sept. 20.

“He really feels like he let down Blazer Nation, he let down his teammates, he let down himself,” Dilfer said. “But I also told him it’s in the past. All you can do is ask for forgiveness, move on and make better decisions next time. We will support him, lock arms with him and love him through this.”
