INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts will be missing three starters for Sunday’s road game against the Rams.
Indianapolis is ruling out right guard Matt Goncalves, wide receiver Alec Pierce and slot cornerback Kenny Moore II for Sunday’s game, forcing the Colts to find answers at three positions.
Goncalves suffered the toe injury midway through the Titans game, and although he was able to play all 57 offensive snaps for Indianapolis, the right guard has not been able to practice this week.
“He’s just not there yet,” Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen said. “He’s making progress, but he’s just not there yet.”
Who will replace Matt Goncalves for the Colts?
Indianapolis will turn to second-year guard Dalton Tucker to replace Goncalves.
Tucker started seven games for the Colts last season after former starter Will Fries went down with a season-ending injury.
“He’s a physical, tough player,” Steichen said. “When his number’s called, he’ll be ready to go.”
Undrafted out of Marshall, Tucker got off to a good start in place of Fries last season, but he struggled as the season progressed. Indianapolis ended up signing veteran Mark Glowinski to replace Tucker down the stretch.
The Colts believe Tucker has improved in his second season in the NFL.
“Dalton started seven games last year, that’s a lot of football he played against top people,” offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr. said. “Dalton is a really, really hard worker. He’s a blue-collar guy; he comes in here, he pours everything he’s got into this every day, and naturally, when you’re a player, the easiest way to grow is to do. … He’s a guy I have complete and total trust and faith in.”
Who will replace Kelly Moore for the Colts?
Moore will likely be replaced primarily by veteran cornerback Mike Hilton, who signed with the Indianapolis practice squad this week.
Hilton said this week that he expects to play right away, and Steichen confirmed the Colts will bring up the veteran.
The Colts have a natural replacement for Pierce.
Who will replace Alec Pierce for the Colts?
Second-year wide receiver Adonai Mitchell has four catches for 41 yards this season, along with a pass interference penalty drawn last week against Tennessee. Mitchell, a 2024 second-round pick, has drawn a lot of praise from the Colts for his ability to get open, but the presence of Pierce has limited him to just 46 snaps through the first three weeks.
Indianapolis needs Mitchell to take a big step; Pierce has been a critical piece of the passing game so far, catching nine passes for 171 yards while being a key target both deep and over the middle of the field.
“I think it’s a huge opportunity,” Steichen said. “He’s going to get a lot more playing time this week. … Obviously, he’s got a huge skill set.”
