Notre Dame football continued its impressive recruiting stretch, as 2027 Wisconsin defensive lineman Richie Flanigan chose the Irish over Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and others.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that he committed to the Irish, as this father Jim, and brother James, who is currently on the team, both played in South Bend. While it wasn’t a gimme commit, Notre Dame’s staff still had to show the younger Flanigan why the should be his choice.
It’s safe to say that that happened, and social media reacted very positively to Notre Dame’s newest commit. Check out below the top reactions to Richie Flanigan verballing to the Irish.
Richie confirms the commitment

While you trust some of the big names in recruiting, sometimes you want to hear directly from the source. Flanigan surely felt like home on his visits to South Bend, and now he’ll officially call it home in the near future.
Jim is a proud father
Super proud of Richie! Thanks to everyone who recruited him, but especially @CoachWash56 and the entire ND staff! We couldn’t be more pumped for the next 6 years! 💪🍀🏈 https://t.co/tKSOPhdqx0

You love to see when a Notre Dame legacy decides to follow in his father’s footsteps. We’ve seen many over the last few years, and Flanigan is the latest with Blue and Gold in his blood.

You can’t stress enough how great of a job Auman has done during his short time in South Bend. He deserves to celebrate any recruiting victory, and this one has to feel great.
Maybe not a defensive lineman?
— Love this get for the Irish. Flanigan is a legit two-way lineman. Could play IOL/DT for ND.
— Always nice to beat up on Michigan and land another big-time talent from Wisconsin
— Really nice start to the 2027 class for Notre Dame, headlined by elite QB Teddy Jarrard https://t.co/Wspj4DYJ7B

It’s pretty safe to say that Notre Dame loves to recruit athletes, and Flanigan fits that mold. He’s got a great frame and could play on either line. It’s a good problem for the Irish to have as they’ll soon have to figure out what side of the ball he’ll line up on.
Did Marcus Freeman know?
Marcus Freeman, shortly before Green Bay (Wis.) DL Richie Flanigan announced his pledge to #NDFootball:
“If we can’t convince a child of a former #NotreDame football player … that this is the right place for them, then we have to evaluate how we’re selling this university.”

It very much seems like Flanigan had already told his soon-to-be head coach the good news, as he didn’t say who, but spoke about legacy’s becoming part of the program. Mission accomplished for the Irish head coach.
Future teammate reacts
Welcome home big guy🍀 https://t.co/zUhxWdem3z
— Ellis “Golden Child” Mcgaskin (@mcgaskin_ellis) September 25, 2025
Seeing a class come together is great, as player from all-across the country will be teaming up together. McGaskin will play behind Flanigan if he ends up on defense, and this pair should be one that is formidable.
