The New England Patriots will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss when they take on the Carolina Panthers in Week 4 of the NFL season on Sunday.
Like the Patriots, the Panthers are a rebuilding team with a few standout talents, including running back Chuba Hubbard. That’s where I am leaning in this week’s “Gimme Him.”
Any help at running back makes sense after the Patriots’ two veterans, Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson, coughed up three fumbles in total in last week’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. So far this season, Hubbard has carried the ball 43 times for 168 yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.
He also has 10 receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns on the year. Granted, things have started slowly for the veteran running back, but he looked like his normal self in last week’s shutout win over the Atlanta Falcons.
The Patriots could utilize his skill set with running back Rhamondre Stevenson struggling with fumbling issues. This could give the team another rushing and receiving threat in addition to rookie TreVeyon Henderson. There is also the fact that Hubbard has been holding onto the football at a higher rate in recent outings.
Hubbard has eight fumbles in his career, while Stevenson doubles that number with 16. Both players have been in the league for the same amount of time, too. Stevenson led the entire NFL with seven fumbles last season. So he’s turning the ball over at an alarming rate.
The Patriots need a shakeup at the running back position, especially if Stevenson is going to continue putting the ball on the ground. A player like Hubbard would be a solid fit for the Josh McDaniels-led offense.
