Over the last week or two, Jonthan Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, has been doing somewhat of a press run regarding his client’s current standoff with the Golden State Warriors. Kuminga has reportedly resisted both of Golden State’s contract offers, with an insistence on a player option on the final year, the supposed stumbling block.
In a recent episode of the “Dubs Talk” podcast, Warriors’ insider Monte Poole explained how Turner’s decision to make Kuminga’s standoff public is unlikely to have sat well with the Warriors’ front office. Golden State is known for conducting negotiations outside of the public eye.
“If you’re the Warriors, you’re like, ‘Dude, what are you doing?’” Poole said. “We keep things really kind of under our vest here. We don’t really do that kind of thing. And the Warriors are a relatively leak-proof organization when it comes to when they actually make a move…So, now you look at what Aaron Turner does, and the Warriors didn’t like that. But they also know the bigger factor is that training camp is so close. They’ve got to get something done. This is not going to work out. One way or the other, they’ve got to get something done. And ideally, like I said earlier, ideally, it’s a sign-and-trade. And that just hasn’t clicked for them.”
Despite the Warriors’ attempts to lock Kuminga into a new, multi-year deal, it’s looking increasingly likely that he will either opt into his qualifying offer ahead of the Oct. 1 deadline or be moved via a sign-and-trade in the coming days.
Turner’s decision to make Kuminga’s situation public may not have sat well with the Warriors, but that won’t change the fact that if they could, they would ink the former lottery pick to a new deal and reassess his future in the coming months. Unfortunately, Kuminga looks set to take control of his own future, and that will likely come via signing his qualifying offer on or before Oct. 1.
