Everton host West Ham United on Monday night in a meeting which pits David Moyes against his former club and a rival manager under the utmost pressure in Graham Potter.
BBC Sport examines some of the key themes going into a game that could prove instrumental in deciding the future of the Hammers boss.
Moyes versus Potter in numbers
The former Brighton and Chelsea boss has been defeated in 12 of his 23 league games at the Hammers helm, at a loss rate of 52% – the highest of any permanent West Ham manager in the Premier League era.
Although Moyes was sometimes seen as overly pragmatic in terms of tactics, the attacking numbers of his second spell compare favourably to Potter’s tenure.
The beleaguered boss may need to repeat the win at Nottingham Forest, one of three victories in West Ham’s past four league matches on the road, if he is to last much longer at London Stadium.
West Ham’s set-piece suffering
Following the 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace last weekend, Match of the Day pundit Wayne Rooney said West Ham were in a crisis of confidence where it “feels like the whole world is against you”.
The problem for Potter’s side is that a paucity of chances in attack has been exacerbated by defensive failings – particularly from corners.
They have let in 13 Premier League goals from an expected goals tally of just 7.8 – the worst negative differential in the league.
They have also conceded seven goals from corners – just one fewer than they did in the whole of last term and at least four more than any other side this season.
Before the loss to Palace, Potter said that defending corners had been a focus of training sessions.
“The responsibility is mine and we have to keep working at it,” he said during the pre-match news conference.
“There is no point in shying away from it because at the moment we are being punished and were a little bit vulnerable from it, but it can help us grow and get better.”
Eagles forward Jean-Philippe Mateta then scored the opening goal of the game – from a corner.
But there are positives for West Ham going into the trip to Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Callum Wilson has scored eight goals in his past seven Premier League games against Everton, in the form of four doubles, while West Ham have beaten Everton five times since the start of 2021 – although it does not take a master tactician to guess where the Toffees will attack on Monday.
