The NFL Players Association has issued a statement following Pittsburgh Steelers QB Skylar Thompson being mugged and robbed during the team’s stay in Ireland for the Week 4 contest vs. the Minnesota Vikings.
After the report of Thompson’s mugging in Ireland broke, the NFLPA issued the following statement (courtesy of NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero):
“We are aware of the incident involving Skylar Thompson in Ireland and are relieved to know he is okay,” A representative told Peliserro. “The NFLPA is actively gathering more information and working to understand the full circumstances surrounding what took place. As always, our priority is the health and safety of our player members — especially as we continue to work on player protections and well-being while playing international games — and we will continue to support Skylar in any way he needs.”
Earlier today, Pelissero reported that Thompson received minor injuries and was “OK” following the mugging on Friday.
Signing with Pittsburgh this past January on a Reserve/Future contract, Thompson more than earned his spot on the Steelers‘ roster with his preseason-MVP-esque performance. He was placed on IR following Pittsburgh’s Week 1 win over the New York Jets.
Thompson was able to celebrate Pittsburgh’s win alongside his teammates in Dublin — the silver lining in what was otherwise a bleak situation.
