What's left for Cincinnati Reds to do on final day to earn MLB's last playoff spot

MILWAUKEE − The Cincinnati Reds on Sept. 27 did something they haven’t done in more than three years.

And that put them in position to do something they haven’t done in more than a century and a half of franchise history.

Buckle up. Because of that means that the last MLB playoff berth to be decided in 2025 will be determined in simultaneous games on the final day of the season, Sept. 28, in Miami and in Milwaukee – with a trip to Los Angeles for Tuesday’s playoff opener hanging in the balance for either the Reds or New York Mets.

TJ Friedl hits a two-run single during the Reds' six-run third inning of their game against the Milwaukee Brewers Sept. 27. The Reds needed to win to keep pace with the New York Mets, who beat the Marlins earlier in the day.

They finished Game 161 tied with the New York Mets for the third National League wild-card spot but hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Mets.

That means either a Reds win against the Brewers or a Mets loss against the Miami Marlins puts the Reds in the playoffs for the first time in a full season since 2013.

In 15 trips to the playoffs during a full season, the Reds have never clinched on the final day of a season.

The Reds, who regained the driver’s seat for the final berth with a series-opening victory over the Brewers on Sept. 26, put themselves in position for the final-day drama by beating the Brewers again Saturday a few hours after the Mets beat the Marlins.

That snapped a 13-series losing streak to the Brewers dating to August 2022.

The last time the Reds went into the final game of a full season with a playoff berth in play, they finished the 1999 season tied with the Mets. Much like this season, that one finished for the Reds in Milwaukee, and they held a head-to-head advantage over the Mets in regular-season play (5-4).

But unlike this season, they settled ties for playoff berths on the field back then, and the Reds lost Game 163 to the Mets 5-0.
