It’s been roughly a month since the Dallas Cowboys made the stunning decision to trade All-Pro pass-rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. Now, he makes his return to Dallas on Sunday Night Football. Hoo boy.
Honestly, as we revisit the deal, it’s still really hard to make sense of what happened. The Cowboys effectively traded a top-10 NFL player in his prime, who is still only 26 years old, for pennies on the dollar compared to his worth (two first-round draft selections that will likely be of the late-round variety, given the Packers‘ expected success). If there was any logic involved in the proceedings, you might need a microscope to see it.
The disastrous aftermath looks exactly like we thought it would, too.
The Parsons’ deal ruined the one thing Cowboys owner Jerry Jones does right. His move was just another devastating blow to the landscape of Dallas professional sports. And Parsons hasn’t hesitated at opportunities to troll Jones or the Cowboys. When you factor in the Packers quickly looking like a prime Super Bowl contender with Parsons in the fold, it’s only another insult stacked on top of a pile of insults.
As for why the Cowboys made the Parsons trade, I’m not sure we’ll ever know the full story. Among other things, it’s probably some combination of not wanting to pay Parsons a huge, new contract (who definitely deserved it) and of Jones being stubborn and stuck in his ways. It’s likely as simple as that when one of the best players in the league changes teams at such a young age.
Does Jerry Jones regret the Micah Parsons trade?
For what it’s worth, this was how Jones tried to justify the Parsons deal in a recent appearance on Dallas sports radio:
“While he [Parsons] does make great plays, there is also a way to approach playing against Micah. As we know, we didn’t exactly win the Super Bowl those years,” Jones said.
“Some plays it looked beautiful, but then other plays — especially running plays — you wish you had a different formation.
“To be trite, we lost games with Micah.”
Uh, I’m not sure that’s the position Jones should be taking right as Parsons prepares to show the Cowboys what they’re missing. It doesn’t sound like he regrets it at all! Oh, well, I’m positive Jones’ comments won’t come back to bite him. Maybe.
