Former Clemson star running back Travis Etienne continues breakout NFL season

The Jacksonville Jaguars left Levi’s Stadium with a statement win on Sunday, and Travis Etienne was right in the middle of it. The former Clemson running back piled up 124 yards on 19 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown that set the tone in a 26-21 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Etienne’s long score came early in the second quarter, breaking free to put Jacksonville in front 7-3. The Jaguars never gave the lead back, improving to 3-1 while handing San Francisco its first loss of the season. It was the second time this year that Etienne has gone over the 100-yard mark on the ground.

Through four weeks, he’s already closing in on 400 rushing yards, averaging close to six yards per carry while adding touchdowns both rushing and receiving. Now in the final season of his rookie deal, the former first-round pick has stacked up more than 2,600 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in his career, despite losing his first NFL season to a foot injury in 2021.

Etienne’s resurgence follows a 2024 season cut short by injuries, when he finished with just over 550 rushing yards. Prior to that, he had back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns in 2022 and 2023.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence complemented the ground game by going 21-for-31 for 174 yards. His lone touchdown pass came on a 4-yard strike to tight end Hunter Long late in the second quarter, stretching the Jaguars’ advantage to 14-3.

Next up, Jacksonville heads back home for a primetime meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, Oct. 6.
