Tennessee Titans to designate Tyjae Spears to return from injured reserve

The Tennessee Titans received some positive news on Monday when head coach Brian Callahan met with the media and announced that running back Tyjae Spears would have his 21-day practice window open, making him eligible to be activated from injured reserve.

The move was somewhat expected after the Titans placed running back Kalel Mullings on injured reserve and did not add another running back to the roster, which now sits at 52 players.

Spears’ return could give the Titans’ struggling offense a boost by adding another dynamic weapon to the backfield to offset Tony Pollard. As Callahan outlined during his press conference, the team intends to rely more on its rushing attack in the coming weeks to help protect rookie quarterback Cam Ward in the early stages of the season.

Though their game against the Houston Texans was full of disappointing moments, their rushing attack was the lone bright spot on offense. Pollard ran hard and found some success on the ground.

Spears was in the midst of an outstanding training camp when he went down with an ankle injury during the Titans’ first preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to the injury, he appeared poised to take on a larger role in the offense heading into his third season. The dynamic back brings a different skill set to the backfield and could add an explosive weapon to an offense that is struggling to sustain drives.

The Titans will return to the practice field on Wednesday, when they will begin preparations for their Week 5 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
