In the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 4 win over the San Francisco 49ers, Travis Hunter played just nine defensive snaps.
This came on the heels of him playing 40-plus defensive snaps in each of the previous two games.
After starting at cornerback opposite of Tyson Campbell on the first possession, Hunter’s snaps came almost strictly on offense from that point forward.
In his place was Buster Brown, who returned from an ankle injury that had sidelined him for much of training camp and the early portion of the regular season until last week.
On Hunter’s nine snaps, he made two tackles and allowed one reception for seven yards, but it sounds like Coen and the coaching staff saw a teaching opportunity for him.
“We probably got a little, I don’t want to say impatient, but he had the one thing, you know, still been going through the process of it,” Liam Coen said on Monday.
Prior to Brown’s injury in camp, he was taking the bulk of the first-team reps. The Jaguars also have Jarrian Jones, who they can work into the mix as well.
Even with Brown back in the mix, the plan moving forward is to continue to get Hunter more opportunities on defense–as well as offense–as he and the Jaguars continue to get acclimated to that two-way role.
However, what that looks like on a weekly basis will likely vary based on the matchup and in-game situations at hand.
“I mean, we’re going to get him right back into it this week,” Coen said of Hunter. “And it’s great to have Montaric back. So that’s just part of kind of figuring out getting guys in. We really wanted to get Buster in the game. That was going to happen regardless.
“So we have all the confidence in the world in really Travis and Buster coming back and Jarrian giving us good reps. So it’s great to have those guys all be able to go play.”
