Joplin starter Ava Wolf threw a one-hit complete game and Bella Munn went 3 for 3 with four RBIs, all in the first inning, as the Eagle softball team logged a 19-0 run-rule-shortened win over Nevada (0-10) Monday at Joplin High School.
The Eagles (10-14) scored 18 of their 19 runs in the first inning. Munn plated Grace Riggs with a double to center field, and Gracie Williamson put the Eagles up 2-0 when she plated Olivia Manes with a line drive single to center.
Ella Watts drove in Williamson with a single to right field, Watts scored on a LillieBelle Stafford double to left, and Stafford made it a 5-0 game when she scored on a Nevada error.
Lily Glover then scored on a Jessica Madl single to left, and Madl later scooted home on a throw to second on an attempted steal. Carlie Howard made it an 8-0 Joplin lead when she scored on an error.
Taylor Love scored on a Munn single to left. Riggs scored on a fielder’s choice. The Eagle lead ballooned to 11-0 when Williamson scored on a Watts double to center field.
Watts, Stafford and Glover made it a 14-0 game when they all scored on bases-loaded walks. Madl and Howard both scored on an error, and Munn gave the Eagle an 18-0 lead when she tripled to left and drove in Love and Riggs.
Joplin’s final run came in the bottom of the second, when Sydney Weidenhammer singled to short and drove in Alexa DeBerry.
In addition to Munn, Joplin’s Watts was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs, and Williamson went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs.
Wolf was strong in the circle, giving up one hit — a second-inning single off the bat of Bella McInroy. Wolf struck out three and walked none in the truncated three-inning game.
Nevada starter Grace Anderson gave up nine earned runs on 12 hits while striking out none and walking eight in two innings.
On Thursday, Joplin will travel to Carthage (7-15).
Carl Junction 5, Carthage 4
Gracie Arnold drove in the go-ahead run in a tie game in the top of the sixth inning as the Carl Junction Bulldogs escaped with a 5-4 win over the Carthage Tigers on Monday at Carthage.
The Bulldogs logged their fifth straight win. They got on the board with a trio of runs in the top of the first inning. Kadence Hunt drove in Jazmyne Blaney and Ryleigh Palmer with a double to left field. Hunt made it 3-0 when she scored on a Georgia Arnold sacrifice.
Carthage drew closer with a pair of scores in the bottom of the third. Emmy Stark plated Alizabeth Willis with a single to center, and Stark made it a 2-3 game when she stole home.
The Tigers earned a 4-3 lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth frame. Lottie Youngblood tied the game with a double to right field that brought in a run, and Willis gave Carthage the lead when she scored on a passed ball.
Carl Junction’s Kinley Spindler tied the game at 4-4 when she scooted home on an error, and Arnold plated the go-ahead run on a single that scored Hunt.
Hunt led Carl Junction at the plate, finishing 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Blaney and Palmer both went 2 for 4 with a run each.
Spencer gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking three in a complete game win.
Youngblood led Carthage at the plate and was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
In the circle, Youngblood gave up three earned runs on 11 hits. She struck out four and walked none in seven innings of work.
On Thursday, Carl Junction (13-4) will host Marshfield (15-4).
