Sept. 30 (UPI) — The Texas Rangers split with veteran manager Bruce Bochy, who led them to a World Series in his first season, but missed the playoffs in 2024 and 2025.

The Rangers announced the move on Monday. Bochy, 70, was offered a front office role and could remain with the Rangers as an advisor.

Bochy was on the final year of his contract with the American League West franchise. He led the Rangers to a 249-237 record from 2023 through 2025.

“Three years ago, Boch came to the Rangers in pursuit of his fourth World Series championship,” Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young told reporters. “He brought instant credibility, wisdom and legitimacy to a team looking to have emerged from a rebuild.

“It only took him one season to accomplish a goal that had eluded this organization for 52 years. While the last two seasons have fallen short of our goals, Bochy will forever be a legend in Texas Rangers history beyond his Hall of Fame pedigree as a manager.”

The Rangers went 90-72 to earn a wild card playoff spot in 2023, when they went on to win their first World Series. They went 78-84 a year later, missing the postseason.

The 2025 Rangers went 81-81 to finish third in the American League West for the second-consecutive season, despite leading MLB with a 3.47 ERA and setting a league record with a .99104 fielding percentage.

The Rangers drove in the 12th-fewest runs in baseball and hit .234 as a team, the fifth-worst mark in the league.

Bochy, a four-time World Series winning manager, owns an overall record of 2,252-2,266 over 28 years in the role. He went 1,052-1,054 over 13 years with the San Francisco Giants, where he won three titles. Bochy led the San Diego Padres to a 951-975 mark over 12 seasons.
