Vic Fangio says Kelee Ringo could be the starter at CB even if Adoree Jackson is healthy

With Adoree’ Jackson nursing a groin injury and Jakorian Bennett on injured reserve, third-year cornerback Kelee Ringo got his first start of the season on Sunday against Tampa Bay.

This was Ringo’s first opportunity to prove himself since losing the starting job to Adoree’ Jackson in training camp. While his tackling needs improvement, Ringo held up well in coverage opposite Quinyon Mitchell.

Ringo ended the day with four tackles, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery, giving Philadelphia the splash plays that Jackson has been unable to provide. When asked about Ringo’s performance and the chance to start even when Jackson is healthy, potentially, Fangio said, “It’s possible.”

“I thought he did good,” Fangio said on Tuesday. “I mean, he can be better, the true test for him will be to see how he improves, but overall, he did good. He was pretty sticky in man coverage. I’d like to see his tackling improve. One thing a guy has to learn that has played predominantly special teams is tackling on defense is a lot different than tackling in special teams. But I’m confident he can improve that.”

The Eagles opted not to re-sign Darius Slay or Isaiah Rodgers in the offseason, putting their faith in Ringo as the next man up. The move initially backfired, but Ringo now has a chance to validate their decision.

In 80 coverage snaps this season, Adoree’ Jackson has allowed 11 catches on 17 targets for 152 yards. His 42.7 defensive grade (via PFF) is the lowest of his nine-year career.
