For the second time in the last decade, a former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback will be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland announced Wednesday morning that Dillon Gabriel, who quarterbacked the Oklahoma Sooners during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, will take over as the starting quarterback in Cleveland.
Gabriel replaced veteran signal caller Joe Flacco in the fourth quarter of the Browns’ blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. It was just his second appearance of the season, and he went 3 of 3 for 19 yards and his first career touchdown pass.
Gabriel takes over a Browns team that is just 1-3 on the season and ranks 31st in the NFL in points per game.
He was a prolific passer in college, putting up big numbers for UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon. In his one season with the Ducks, Gabriel was a Heisman finalist and helped Oregon to an undefeated regular season and Big Ten championship.
Now he hopes to turn around a Cleveland franchise that seemingly had its answer at quarterback a few seasons ago before trading Baker Mayfield and going with Deshaun Watson. Watson flamed out and the Browns used two draft picks in 2025 on Gabriel and former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
The Browns will take on the 2-2 Minnesota Vikings this weekend in Cleveland. Minnesota is No. 9 in the league in points per game allowed in 2025.
