UCLA making coaching staff change days before facing Penn State

Penn State is heading to the West Coast to play its first road game of the season, and they will do so against a UCLABruins program undergoing some coaching turnover in the middle of the season. After previously moving on from head coach DeShaun Foster just weeks into the season, the Bruins are reportedly making a change at offensive coordinator days before Penn State takes on UCLA in Pasadena in Week 6.

According to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN, UCLA has moved on from Tino Sunseri as offensive coordinator and assigned playcalling duty to tight ends coach Jerry Neuheisel.

UCLA is coming into the week with the nation’s 119th total offense with an average of 321.3 yards per game. UCLA’s 14.3 points per game ranks 134th in the nation, the running game ranks 106th (124.25 yards per game), and passing game ranks 99th (197.0 yards per game) in the nation. All of this is off an offseason where UCLA turned heads with the transfer addition of quarterback Nico Iamaleava from Tennessee.

Neuheisel joined the UCLA coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2018 and later took on the role as wide receivers coach in 2021. He held that title for three seasons before moving to tight ends coach going into the 2024 season. He is the son of former UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel and he played quarterback for the Bruins.

That gives a bit of uncertainty to Penn State defensive cooridnator Jim Knowles in preparing the Penn State defense for this week’s matchup, but it may not be too much to be worried about from a defensive coaching standpoint. Penn State’s defense has not been the concern this season even after the loss to Oregon last weekend. There could be some new wrinkles in the coaching change going on with UCLA, but the Bruins may not have a bag of tricks deep enough to seriously threaten the Nittany Lions this week.
