Todd Bowles is one of the better defensive minds in the NFL, despite what his national image may be from his time with the New York Jets. His time there, he didn’t get to show the prolific defense he had when he was with the Arizona Cardinals under Bruce Arians, but since coming to Tampa Bay, he has that defense playing at an elite level.
So, of course, when Todd Bowles compliments a defense, it should carry some extra weight.
He was asked about the Seahawks’ defense the Bucs will play on Sunday in Week 5 and he was honest about the challenge ahead. He told the media, “[They may not be] recognizable to some people here [but] they’re recognizable to us. They’ve got two great defensive tackles inside with [Byron] Murphy and Leonard Williams, and they’ve got DeMarcus Lawrence. They’ve got the corner [Devon] Witherspoon from Illinois outside. They’ve got a very good group. They play fast, they play physical, and they play violent.”
There are more names he didn’t mention who can create other problems as well, including young playmakers, defensive lineman Byron Murphy II, cornerback Riq Woolen, and rookie safety Nick Emmanwori.
The Seahawks‘ head coach has brought the Ravens‘ defensive mentality with him to the Pacific Northwest from when he was their defensive coordinator. The team has passed several tests this year, but the Bucs hope to be one of the first teams to make them fail when they face off on Sunday.
