Is Commanders CB Marshon Lattimore being targeted more due to his struggles?

Washington Commanders cornerback Marshon Lattimore has not had the best season so far in 2025.

The veteran, four-time Pro Bowler, was at one time one of the best cornerbacks in the league. However, Lattimore has actually been one of the worst starting corners in the league so far in 2025.

Pro Football Focus gives Lattimore a 44.4 grade through four games, which ranks 144th out of 164 qualified corners. The corner has allowed 11 receptions so far and has yet to snag an interception. In fact, Lattimore hasn’t gotten an interception since the first game of the 2023 season, when he was still with the New Orleans Saints.

As a result of Lattimore’s struggles, the Commanders have a bottom-five passing defense in the league so far this year.

On Wednesday, head coach Dan Quinn was asked if he thought opposing teams were targeting Lattimore more because of his struggles. The coach defended his corner, calling him “one competitive guy.”

“I don’t feel that’s been the case… When you play corner and you play offensive tackle, there’s a lot of plays that go good that go unnoticed, and there’s one that goes up top, and like, that’s part of living life outside,” Quinn explained.

“What I do know about him (Lattimore), this is one competitive guy, and he’s always down for the challenge and the fight. I’m looking forward to working with him again this week.”

As Quinn pointed out, corner and tackle are two positions that rarely get noticed unless they have a bad moment. Clips of corners getting burnt are all the rage on social media, but clips of corners locking receivers down and having quality reps are not nearly as popular.

Of course, there is also the fact that Lattimore legitimately is playing worse than he ever has overall. Still, though, Lattimore has been elite before, and clearly, his head coach isn’t ready to give up on him. Lattimore will have another tough test in Week 5 as he will be responsible for either Ladd McConkey or Keenan Allen and the high-powered Chargers’ offense.

Some good news for the Commanders is that star quarterback Jayden Daniels was recently cleared from his injury. Coming off a loss last weekend, the Commanders desperately need their leader and best player back on the field.
