The San Francisco 49ers managed to steal a gritty win from the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Thursday night. Nobody personified the grittiness of the victory more than quarterback Mac Jones, who battled multiple injury problems during the game.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan after Thursday’s win spoke with reporters and mentioned Jones did deal with some knee issues after being landed on by Rams defensive end Byron Young. He was able to return and not miss any snaps.
Jones was also shown multiple times on television having his right forearm worked on by the 49ers training staff. Shanahan said the issue was just some cramping which shouldn’t be a major issue moving forward. The backup QB overcame whatever health obstacles were thrown his way to complete 33-of-49 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns in the thrilling overtime victory.
His health could be a big story line for the 49ers as Brock Purdy continues dealing with the toe injury he suffered in Week 1. Purdy aggravated that injury in his Week 4 return vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the 49ers roster moves before Thursday’s game indicate the issue could be longer term than they originally hoped. Shanahan after the game said Purdy is week-to-week, although the club does have additional time off now leading up to their Week 6 showdown with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Central Florida.
Shanahan will speak with reporters Friday and then the club will get a couple days off before returning to regular practices Wednesday in the lead up to Week 6. The health of their top two QBs will continue to be something worth keeping a close eye on.
