Ahead of their matchup on Monday Night Football, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared his thoughts on what he’s seen from the Jaguars’ Travis Hunter.
“I haven’t watched a ton. I mean, obviously, I’ve watched his defensive snaps now, but I know he was a super-talented player in college. It was fun to watch him at Colorado, make plays happen, and coming out in the draft process, always watch those receivers,” said Mahomes, via Chiefs Wire. “He’s special when he gets the football in his hand and being able to break tackles and make guys miss.”
Defensively, Hunter has played 101 snaps this season, 86 of which came between Weeks 2 and 3.
Last week, after initially starting opposite of Tyson Campbell, Hunter played only nine defensive snaps, including none in the second half. Liam Coen said that was a decision that “we all made together.”
Hunter has logged 10 tackles while in coverage; he’s allowed six receptions on seven targets for 71 yards with a pass breakup. He’s been penalized twice as well, per PFF.
“Seeing him play defense now, he’s done a great job with this defense, and a great job in this scheme of playing man and zone and being around the football as well,” said Mahomes, “A special football player, I know someone that we’ll have to account for when he’s out there on the field.”
With Montaric Brown back in the mix, he ended up shouldering the bulk of the cornerback snaps, with Hunter focusing on offense last week.
The Jaguars still plan to work Hunter into the defensive equation, but what that looks like Monday Night against Mahomes remains to be seen.
