Cross-country roundup: Willmar Cardinal boys, girls, each place 11th at Alexaandria

Oct. 5—ALEXANDRIA — The Willmar boys and girls cross-country teams both finished in 11th place at the 52nd Annual Lions Meet of Champions XC Invitational Saturday at Arrowwood Resort.

The Cardinal boys finished with 285 points and the girls had 304 points.

Three Willmar boys placed in the top 50. Zach Engstrom was 19th with a time of 17 minutes. John Spencer finished in 40th at 17:33.9. Levi Twedt was 50th at 17:48.1.

Allison Mages and Gabby Martinez were in the top 50 in the girls race. Mages led the Cardinals with an 18th-place time of 20:10.5. Martinez finished in 46th place at 20:59.7.

Led by Cole Reilly’s first-place time of 16:00.9, Sioux Falls Washington was the boys champion with 89 points.

Perham claimed the girls championship with 64 points. Staples-Motley’s Audrey Brownell won the individual title at 18:31.9.

Willmar races in the Central Lakes Conference championship on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Detroit Lakes.

The Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg boys finished eighth in the Class A race at the Swain Invitational at Enger Golf Course in Duluth.

The Braves finished with 191 points. Alex Zurn finished in eighth place at 18:13.4.

Wadena-Deer Creek won with 56 points and were led by Grant Nelson’s first-place time of 17:30.6.

Mamie Luft was Benson/KMS’ top girls runner. She finished 73rd at 28:11.1.

Trinity/United claimed the team title with 56 points. Lake City’s Olivia Yotter won the race at 20:04.2.

Benson/KMS competes at the Minnewaska invitational at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Minnewaska Golf Club in Glenwood.
