Taysom Hill is set to make his 2025 New Orleans Saints debut on Sunday against the New York Giants, but should you activate him in his first game back from last year’s season-ending knee injury? The do-it-all gadget player is listed at quarterback this year, not tight end, but he’s eligible for the flex position in a lot of fantasy football leagues. He’s also a scoring threat every time he touches the football; no Saints player has more runs of 30-plus yards since he became a regular part of the offense back in 2018 (9 of them, 5 of those touchdowns).
But this is Hill’s first action after he suffered a torn ACL almost 11 months ago. The Times-Picayune’s Jeff Duncan reports that he’ll be used “in his normal gadget role today but is expected to be listed as QB2 behind Spencer Rattler on the roster.” By designating rookie backup Tyler Shough as the emergency QB3, Shough can dress out for the game but not count against the active roster limit. He’ll also be limited to playing when both Rattler and Hill are unavailable. Make of that what you will.
Personally, I wouldn’t play Hill this week. We shouldn’t expect him to see his usual workload with five or six rushing attempts, two or three receptions, and the occasional deep pass downfield. Juwan Johnson is still going to take point in receiving targets at tight end, where Hill is going to see some snaps. Alvin Kamara is still going to take the lion’s share of rushing attempts. It makes more sense to ease Hill back into action when the offense pushes into the New York red zone and save his knees for physical fourth-round attempts later in the season. Starting him on your fantasy team would be a bit of a gamble, and at least for now, the odds are not in our favor.
