Is LeBron James hinting at retirement?

Is LeBron James beginning a farewell tour? Or does his cryptic “Second Decision” teaser video, that released via social media on Oct. 6, mean something else?

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar’s 10-second video shows him in street clothes, walking on a basketball court toward a chair positioned across from another individual wearing a suit. Then a graphic quickly zooms into the next frame with the words, “The second decision. Coming soon.”

A message that accompanies James’ post reads, “The decision of all decisions. October 7th. 12 pm EST,” which is 9 a.m. MST.

The video looks similar to his memorable ESPN sitdown titled “The Decision” in July 2010. That’s when James revealed that he planned to “take my talents to South Beach” and left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat in free agency.

James, the league’s all-time leading scorer, is entering his 23rd season, another league record. The upcoming 2025-26 season will also be his eighth year with the Lakers after playing for Cleveland and Miami. He won two titles with the Heat and one each for the Cavaliers and Lakers.

In June, James opted into a $52.6 million player option to stay with the Lakers. He has a no-trade clause in his contract and will become a free agent if he doesn’t retire after this season.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James looks on during the first half of a game between the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers at Acrisure Arena on Oct. 3, 2025, in Palm Desert, California.

James hasn’t played in either of the Lakers’ preseason games. Los Angeles opened with a 110-83 loss to the Phoenix Suns in Palm Desert on Oct. 4, followed by a 111-103 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 5.

He was sidelined through the first week of training camp because of a glute injury. Lakers coach JJ Redick said before the Suns-Lakers game, “It would be nice” to have James play at least one of their six preseason games. However, Redick added it will probably be a bit longer to make sure James is ready for the regular season opener, when the Lakers host the Warriors on Oct. 21.

James, who turns 41 on Dec. 30, was an All-NBA Third Team selection last season when he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, shot 51.3% and 37.6% from 3.

He’s the only player in league history to earn All-NBA honors over age 40 and is 50 games away from breaking Hall of Famer Robert Parish’s record for most regular-season games played.
