NFC South standings: Where do Falcons sit entering Week 6?

The Atlanta Falcons were off with a bye in Week 5, but the rest of the NFC South kept busy. The three other division teams went a combined 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. Then, to cap off the evening, the Buffalo Bills suffered their first loss of the season against the New England Patriots.

The Falcons will play the Bills next week on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and will face the Patriots a few weeks later on the road. So what happened with those other NFC South teams in Week 5?

The Panthers overcame a 17-10 halftime deficit to defeat the Miami Dolphins, 27-24, at home. Carolina improved to 2-3 on the season and the team currently sits one spot behind Atlanta in the division standings.

The New Orleans Saints got their first victory of the season, a 26-14 win over the New York Giants. While Sunday’s win didn’t do much for the Saints, who still sit at the bottom of the NFC South standings with a 1-4 record, was the first career win for head coach Kellen Moore.

Lastly, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers escaped with another close victory in Week 5. This time, they overcame a seven-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to steal a 38-35 win over the Seattle Seahawks. The Buccaneers are still on top of the division with a 4-1 record.

NFC South Standings: Entering Week 6

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-1)
  2. Atlanta Falcons (2-2)
  3. Carolina Panthers (2-3)
  4. New Orleans Saints (1-4)

The Falcons remain in second place at 2-2 entering Week 6, and they will have their work cut out for them against Buffalo. It probably doesn’t help that the Bills are coming off a brutal loss, but the Falcons also have an extra week to prepare that Week 6 matchup.
