The Washington Commanders had another slow start, but came on strong, soundly outplaying the Chargers over the final three quarters.
Here are some of the quick facts from the Commanders‘ encouraging 27-10 Week 5 victory over the Chargers in Los Angeles:
- Washington had not defeated the Chargers on the road since the 1986 regular season. Interestingly enough, the Redskins also had a slow start in that game, as the Chargers led 21-3 in the second quarter. However, when Jay Schroeder found Gary Clark in the fourth quarter for a Redskins touchdown, Washington had come back for a 30-27 win over the Chargers.
- Sunday was the third consecutive game in which G Brandon Coleman was inactive. Strange, seeing he started 16 of 17 games last year in his NFL rookie season. Something is going on here…
- The Commanders spotted the Chargers a 10-0 lead. After recovering a Chargers fumble in Washington territory in the second quarter, the Commanders scored 27 unanswered points, shutting out the Chargers the rest of the way.
- After two offensive possessions per team, it was quite lopsided in the Chargers’ favor. They had outrushed Washington 69-23, passed better at 54-7, so total offense was 123 yards to 30 for Washington. The Chargers had the ball for 10:35, compared to only 4:25 for the Commanders. The Chargers had scored ten points, while the Commanders had two punts, one first down, and zero points.
- After being down 10-0, the Commanders enjoyed scoring drives of: 9 plays 74 yards (touchdown), 8 plays 82 yards (field goal), 7 plays 69 yards (touchdown), 8 plays 39 yards (field goal), and 13 plays 99 yards (touchdown).
- The Commanders’ defense sacked Chargers QB Justin Herbert five times: Dorence Armstrong 2.0, Von Miller 1.5, Jer’Zhan Newton 1.0, Jacob Martin 0.5.
- Kicker Matt Gay was 3-3 on his extra points and 2-2 on field goal attempts, connecting on all five of his kicks vs the Chargers.
- In all three games won, the Commanders have run the ball well. For 200+ in wins over the Giants and Raiders, and 163 yards on 28 carries (5.8) against the Chargers.
- Rookie 7th round draft choice RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt, aka Bill, had his best day as a pro. He gained 111 rushing yards on 14 carries, while also catching two passes for 39 yards.
- Deebo Samuel led the Commanders with eight receptions for 96 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown reception.
- Receiver Luke McCaffrey continued to make contributions, as he had a long kickoff return of 40 yards (3 for 92 total) and a 50-yard pass reception.
- Jayden Daniels, after missing two games, completed 15 of 26 passing attempts for 231 yards, including a touchdown pass. He was not intercepted; he was sacked once for -5 yards. He also contributed 39 rushing yards on eight carries.
- With the win, Washington is now 3-2, the first time Washington has started 3-2 or better in consecutive seasons since 2017-18.
- QB Jayden Daniels is the first quarterback in NFL history to have 4,000-plus passing and 1,000-plus rushing yards in his first 20 career games.
- After the horrendous first-quarter statistics (see above), Washington finished the game leading the Chargers in: first downs 22-17, total yards 389-315, yards per play 7.1 to 4.9, passing 226-160, yards per pass 8.4 to 4.3, and rushing 163-155.
- Mike Sainristil ended a Chargers third-quarter drive with an interception at the one-yard line. It was the second consecutive game Sainristil contributed an interception.
