The New York Jets caught a beating from the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, losing soundly 37-22.

The final score looks better than it really was, with New York scoring two late garbage-time touchdowns to make it appear respectable. But if your eyes were on the owner’s suite towards the end of the game, you may have caught Cowboys owner Jerry Jones appearing to flip off Jets fans as Dallas began to celebrate their victory.

Jones was caught “flipping the bird” from his box, seemingly pointed at the crowd beneath him, but the Cowboys’ longtime steward insists it was an accident, and he wasn’t trying to be vulgar.

Jerry Jones insists he meant to put his thumb up, not his middle finger

During his weekly radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Jones explained the ordeal and described how the accident took place.

“And that was inadvertent on my part. That was right after we’d made our last touchdown and we were all excited about it, there wasn’t any antagonistic issue or anything like that, I just put up the wrong show on the hand. But that was inadvertently done — and I’m not kidding, if you want to call it accidental, you can call it accidental,” Jones told The Fan.

“It got straightened around pretty quick, I got the chance to look at it, it got straightened around pretty quick but the intention was thumbs up and then basically pointing at our fans because everybody was jumping up and down excited.”

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been caught showing off their middle finger to a fan from their suite.

In 2009, the NFL fined former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams $250,000 for “flipping the bird” at a fan following a Titans win.

While Jones claims his was unintentional, it remains to be seen if he’ll be getting a fine from the league office.
