It took a few weeks, but Evan Engram appears to be emerging as a weapon for the Denver Broncos.
After an underwhelming start to the season that was slowed down by minor injuries, Engram has started to become more involved over the last two weeks. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has targeted the veteran tight end 13 times over the last two games and Engram has hauled in eight receptions for 62 yards, two first downs and a touchdown in that stretch.
Sure, those aren’t crazy numbers that will excite fantasy football managers, but they are a step in the right direction after Engram had four catches for 33 yards through the first three weeks (and two appearances) of the season.
“[H]e’s been a great teammate,” Broncos quarterback Bo Nix said when asked about Engram after Sunday’s game. “He’s been very hardworking. He shows up every day ready to get better. He really works hard. He’s on the field a lot. He’s out there before anybody else. He stays and he adds a level of experience slash competitive nature that not everybody in that situation has, especially not playing a whole lot, probably as much as he wanted to, but he never really complained, never wavered, just kind of figured out how he could be pieced in.
“Then, once his moment showed up today, he made a couple really huge catches on those drives and breaking a tackle to go score was big. You don’t have to run any more plays against a tough red zone defense. So really good to see him get in the end zone. Excited for what’s to come with him. I know it’s just trying to build certain things and just put him in places to succeed. I think he showed today that he’s on the right track.”

Following a 21-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in which Engram caught a crucial touchdown pass, coach Sean Payton explained that he had a heated moment with the tight end that sparked a response.
“I got pissed at him and he was pissed at me,” Payton said. “I just got after him a little just because I knew that he hadn’t gotten the touches. And then it was like, all right, let’s find these throws real quick. He responded and it was kind of a good thing. He’s a great weapon. He made some big plays – obviously the touchdown. He’s not the primary guy to be in the quarterback’s face. He made some big plays for us.”
After the game, Engram said he appreciated Payton’s approach.

Coming off an injury-riddled campaign in 2024, it’s not too surprising that Engram needed a few weeks to get going in a new offense with the Broncos. But after a rocky start, Engram’s stock appears to be trending up.
