The Philadelphia Eagles are 4-1. They and the Buffalo Bills were the last of the unbeatens. They both still own pro football’s best records despite losing. Meanwhile, the City of Brotherly Love is in a state of panic. That shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, nor should anyone find fault with the fact that the most recent crisis is happening.
Philadelphia is home to one of pro football’s most demanding fan bases and media machines. This is a very football-literate crowd. Truth be told, how the Eagles are winning is just as important as the wins themselves.
Each triumph seemed like some football version of ‘survive and advance’. The loss feels like every looming issue has finally caught up with them. So, here we are, barely a month into the season, and the Birds are forced to go back to the drawing board. Adjustments are necessary, and they must be made immediately.
Kevin Patullo isn’t getting much sleep these days.
The offense was designed around running the football, but the offensive line is banged up. Saquon Barkley has struggled to find running lanes, and to no one’s surprise, the wide receivers wanted the football more often.
Everyone acknowledged the need for greater involvement from the outside. A.J. Brown apologized for how he expressed his concerns. Game day came this past Sunday. There were concerted efforts to involve him and DeVonta Smith.
They enjoyed two of their better games since the regular season began. Wouldn’t you know it? The Eagles lost anyway. Despite their shift in philosophy, one of the biggest takeaways from Week 5’s failure was that the offense should have run the ball more often in the second half.
This is a short week. A trip to MetLife Stadium to tackle the New York Giants looms. In preparation, Kevin Patullo and the coaching staff are pulling all-nighters.

Long hours and minimal acknowledgement for the sacrifice these guys make are part of the job description for NFL coaches and their assistants. Something tells us this Eagles staff will figure things out. They work too hard. They care too much.
We’re about to learn a lot about what type of coach Kevin Patullo will be. He’s the OC of an NFL franchise. There are only 32 of those jobs in the world, so we understand the long hours. He has passed the first test. We acknowledge the work ethic.
You can best believe the same thing is happening in the Giants organization. Both sides are coming off losses. The team that better adjusts and plans will win on Thursday Night Football.
Philly has owned this rivalry as of late. Some view this as a ‘get-right game’ for the Birds. We’ll see if that statement is accurate. Everyone can sleep once the season is over.
