The Philadelphia Phillies are known for wearing two main jerseys these days. Philadelphia has a white jersey with red pinstripes that they will wear at home, and then a simple grey jersey with red lettering on the road.

The Phillies used to wear powder blue jerseys on the road from 1972 to 1988. Now, with the white and grey jerseys as the main one in the rotation, Philadelphia only calls on the alternate powder blue jerseys on special occasions. The Phillies use them to pay tribute to the 1980 World Series team, and have been known to turn to them in a moment of need.

Notably, the Phillies are down 2-0 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2025 NLDS. Trying to generate a spark, Philadelphia got approval from the league to wear its powder blue jerseys for Games 3 and 4 in the series.

Here is more information on the Phillies’ alternate baby blue jerseys, including their history and how the team performs in them.

Why do the Phillies wear powder blue jerseys?

The Phillies wore powder blue jerseys when they played on the road from 1972 to 1988. Philadelphia started wearing them again in 2018, but as a rare alternate. Typically, the Phillies will wear them to pay homage to the 1980 team, which won the World Series. When the organization brought them back, it was decided that they would wear them mainly on Thursdays when playing at home. Because they wear them so sparingly, the jersey combo has become a favorite of both players and fans.

The powder blue jerseys got a lot of eyes on them in August 2025 when Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs.
