Why did Brewers fans decide to travel to Wrigley Field for Game 3 of the NLDS? Here's what they said

We asked Milwaukee Brewers fans arriving to Wrigley Field why they decided to travel down to Chicago for Game 3 of the National League Division Series vs. the Cubs.

Here’s what they said:

“How can you not?” said Angela Zodrow of Green Lake, who was sporting blue overalls covered in the Famous Racing Sausages. “This is the one for the ages.”

“We wouldn’t miss this. This is what you live for,” said Tom Landgraf, a longtime Brewers season ticket holder from New Berlin. “At our age, we’re kind of running out of time. So, we got to do it.”

Before the Brewers existed, Tom — who grew up in Madison — said he used to take a bus and subway to catch games at Wrigley as a kid.

Wrigley Field first-timers

“It’s my first time here at Wrigley,” Laurie Landgraf of New Berlin said. “I thought, if there’s a game to go to, this is the one.”

Jacob Sankey of Stevens Point, who was at the game with a group of friends, had never been to Wrigley before Oct. 8 either.

“It’s just kind of a historic stadium,” he said. “Gotta get there.”

‘Bigger than just a win’

“It’s not too often that you get to see a chance at a sweep between the Brewers and Cubs in a playoff series because it’s never happened before,” said Dylan Carrington, from the Madison area. “So, I don’t know if I’ll ever get this opportunity again.”

The Brewers and the Cubs had never played in the postseason prior to this year. Game 4 in the series would be played 8:08 p.m. Oct. 9 in Chicago, should the Cubs avoid elimination Oct. 8.

“It’s Uecker’s year,” Zodrow said. Bob Uecker — the voice of the Brewers for 54 years, an entertainer and icon — died of small cell lung cancer in January, just shy of his 91st birthday.

Zodrow brought with her to the game a cutout of the “love” hand sign with a heart and “Emmet is love” on it in honor of her son, whose life was cut short, at 12 years old, this summer.

“We need to do this. It’s so much bigger than just a win this time,” she said.
