VJ Edgecombe started the first two preseason games for the Philadelphia 76ers, and coach Nick Nurse hinted that could be a preview of his role to start the 2025-26 campaign.
Edgecombe totaled 24 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, one steal and one blocked shot in two games against the New York Knicks in Abu Dhabi. He committed only three turnovers across 55 minutes of action, while shooting 31.8% from the field.
The third pick had the opportunity to play alongside Tyrese Maxey in the backcourt and alternated ball-handling responsibilities next to the All-Star on the court. Nurse likes the versatility that the two players bring to the starting lineup.
I’ve seen that Tyrese and VJ look very good and very comfortable out there doing kind of both things. We were hoping that was the case, but it looked to me like it was even well advanced. Either one of them can play point. Either one of them can come off the ball. Both of them can be out there on their own at the point. They can take turns if they are out there together, and I think it plays to their strengths.
Edgecombe was highly touted out of Baylor because of his ability to impact games on both ends of the court. He was viewed as one of the most athletic players in the draft and was an offensive force when getting downhill, thanks to his ability to create for himself and stretch the floor.
The 20-year-old worked extensively on his 3-point shooting over the offseason, along with other key elements of his game that will enable him to play at either guard position. The team likes the tempo and feel for the game he plays with, which are vital skill sets to have as a guard.
Edgecombe may be thrust into a larger role to begin the year with Jared McCain sidelined with a thumb injury. He offers flexibility in the lineup and should be in store for a productive season, either as a starter or as one of the first players off the bench.
“I think there is certainly a good portion of guys that we know are going to be in that top 6-7 part of the rotation, and then you’re going to eight, nine, whatever,” Nurse said. “I wish that we had more time. A lot of it is going to be determined on who is available that is going to force the rotation almost onto it.”
