What is John Mateer's injury status for the Red River Showdown?

The first availability report of the week for the Red River Showdown was released on Wednesday evening, and the most significant question mark surrounding the game remains unanswered ahead of Saturday.

Oklahoma starting quarterback John Mateer, who injured his hand in the win over Auburn and had surgery the following Wednesday, was listed as questionable on the initial availability report for Oklahoma’s game against Texas. Pete Thamel of ESPN reported on Tuesday that Mateer was pushing to play, and there was some optimism he might be able to go. And with three more days until Oklahoma and Texas kick off Saturday afternoon, it’s still a possibility, even if the initial timeline had him out for either the South Carolina or Ole Miss game.

Also showing up as questionable on the initial availability report is Keontez Lewis. Lewis ran into the brick wall beyond the end zone early in the Sooners‘ win over Kent State. Lewis was down on the field for a long time but was walking around in the building on Monday. It’s his second major injury scare of the season after suffering a concussion against Temple in Week 3.

Left tackle Logan Howland is doubtful for this week. He’s been battling injuries the last several weeks and hobbled off the field in OU’s win over Kent State.

From the Texas side, it looks like they’ll have most of their key players available this week aside from running back C.J. Baxter. Baxter has been out since Sept. 13, when the Longhorns beat UTEP. Quintrevious Wisner was the other running back name to watch on the availability reports after suffering a hamstring injury in Texas’ loss to Florida in Week 6. But he’s absent from the availability report, which likely means he’s healthy and going to play.

Texas is probably going to have star cornerback Malik Muhammed available this week, which provides a huge boost to the Texas defense after they struggled against the Gators.
