MILTON, Georgia, Oct. 10 — The Gainesville [GA] Red Elephants are visiting the SN No. 14 Milton [GA] Eagles Friday night in The Sporting News High School Football Game of the Week. Gainesville leads 14-3.
Both teams enter the game at 6-1 on the season, and Milton has been ranked in the SN Top 25 all year even after losing that season opener to Buford, currently the SN No. 9 team in the nation.
Gainesville, meanwhile, is ranked No. 10 in the Georgia state rankings, and the Red Elephants are focused on winning games like this to establish themselves as a national brand on par with Milton, Buford, and Georgia’s top-ranked Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams. Gainesville’s only loss is also to a team currently ranked in the SN Top 25 as the Red Elephants were defeated by the SN No. 23 Carrollton [GA] Trojans, 43-21, back on September 12.

Gainesville’s defense has bent, but it hasn’t broken. They force a fourth down, and on a low snap on a 24-yard field goal try, the Red Elephants’ special teams rewards the defense by blocking the attempt.

Gainesville gets a first down at Milton’s 14-yard line after a pass interference call on the Eagles. On first down, they move it to the 4-yard line, and Nigel Newkirk takes it down to the 2-yard line on 1st-and-goal and then pounds it in from there to extend Gainesville’s lead.
The Red Elephants are doing the one thing that nobody’s been able to do on Milton all year – consistently string drives together and put points on the board.
